How did we go from a commemoration of the shortest day to what we do today?
Well, people got involved. Master manipulators of the ages, ifin' you were to ask me. So a bit of the festival of light got caught up with Saints, and bit of celebrating children.
Enter Queen Victoria, her love for Albert brought the humble Christmas tree/Yule log onto the big stage. And there it has stayed.
As if piling gobs of whatever you could find onto a helpless tree weren't bad enough, enter the gaudy, stupid and much coveted presents and traditions of the holiday season.
This stupid lamp never fails to crack me up. 'A Christmas Story' is a holiday favorite of mine. Do I have one of the reproductions? Banish the thought, not even a tiny little one for the tree. Bad taste is bad. And this is bad, funny, but really bad.
When this movie came out I think it was the gun that nailed it as a Christmas classic. What boy, at least in the midwest, doesn't dream of a BB Gun of his very own? Both of my brothers did. Psst, I don't know anyone who lost an eye. Bruises? Contusions? Em, lots of those, no eyes though.
In recent years my eye has become more and more jaded toward the whole, 'Season of Giving'. When people get injured, maimed and even killed in pursuit of the best deal, well yeah, it's gone too far.
So let us focus on the softer side, the romantic side of the season if you will.
When my kids were little, traditions were followed. There is no big meal on Christmas Eve. Rather it's a soup and make your own sandwich night. My husband likes to make Seafood chowder, though last year it was Chili....because I'm the only one who doesn't LOVE it. Chili from China bowls is an odd sight.
The good China must come out. My daughter demands it. The holidays mean good dishes and silver for her. (Yes, she's polished the silver)
My son enjoys the laid back attitude about, well, everything. There are goodies galore, and I never paid much attention to what they ate on Christmas Eve. One day out of the year wasn't going to ruin their health, or their teeth.
We created an easy going holiday where stress is left out in the cold.
What about you? What happens every year in your household? What do your characters do with Christmas?
